  • Clamp down on tyre rogues
    Cherwell District Council is appealing for help to tackle a rising tide of dumped tyres. More than a thousand have been dumped so far this year with the latest at a lay-by in Station Road, Cropredy, containing 160 tyres.
  • Tackling town trash
    A litter blitz has taken place in Banbury town centre this week as part of Cherwell District Council's bid to keep the district clean and tidy. The event took place between 14 and 18 May and aimed to get town centre traders involved in spreading the message.
  • Meet the new Chairman
    Councillor Colin Clarke is Cherwell District Council's new Chairman. Born in Banbury, Colin is a retired police officer. He's married, with three children and three grandchildren. Colin said: 'I want to thank Councillor Timothy Hallchurch for his serving as Chairman for the last year - he'll be a difficult act to follow.'
  • Waste not, want not
    Work has begun to create a reuse and sustainability centre in Bicester, aiming to cut the number of items going to landfill. Cliff Jordan has just started a one-year contract as project development manager and it will be his task to source funding and premises for the centre.
  • Free, gratis and for nothing
    Cherwell residents might now be able to take advantage of a free energy-saving scheme which could save them a small fortune. Cherwell District Council's partner, the United Sustainable Energy Agency, has managed to access grants to provide free cavity wall and loft insulation through its Cocoon scheme.
  • Join in for the jubilee
    Communities planning to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee might be in for a little help from Cherwell District Council. Small grants of between £100 and £500 are being made available and almost £10,000 has already been claimed.
  • Smokers told to cough up
    A pair of smokers clearly had money to burn after ignoring littering fines from Cherwell District Council. On 30 November last year, Christopher Ahlgram (age unknown) of Cox's Lane, Enstone, was spotted dropping a cigarette butt outside Iceland Stores in Sheep Street Bicester.
  • Meet the challenge
    Bicester residents are being challenged to walk or cycle on one journey they would usually make by car. The Eco Bicester team has launched the Cycle for Bicester scheme in a bid to cut vehicle exhaust emissions and help people improve their health into the bargain.

  • A chance to find a new you
    Find a new you with yoga classes in Kidlington and Weston on the Green, and pilates for people with reduced mobility in Kirtlington. Cherwell District Council's Go Active coordinator, Hazel Walsh, said 'Yoga is a wonderful way to improve your flexibility and strength, improve your breathing and calm your mental state. You don't need to be able to bend in two and you don't need a leotard. Yoga is for normal people who want to feel better in themselves.
  • Fraud for tobacco scheme goes up in smoke
    A pair of benefit fraudsters narrowly avoided jail after swindling a total of more than £38,000 in housing and council tax benefits from two councils. Robert Goldsmith of Woodfield, Banbury, failed to reveal that he was receiving a civil service pension when he made his benefits claims.
  • Your chance to play a part
    Cherwell District Council is calling for enthusiastic people to volunteer as marshals when the Olympic Torch relay comes through the district in July. Volunteer marshals will work in key locations along the Torch relay route as it goes through Bicester, Kirtlington and Kidlington. They'll ensure that the event is safe and enjoyed by everyone by helping to supervise the route. The council will provide training sessions to ensure everyone knows what they have to do on the day.
  • Sporting stars' chance to shine
    The second annual Cherwell Sports Awards will be hosted by Cherwell District Council on Saturday 7 July at Spiceball Leisure Centre, Banbury. Director of Community and Environment at Cherwell, Ian Davies, said: 'This is the second year that we've celebrated Cherwell's sporting prowess with these awards. They're an opportunity for Cherwell residents to highlight contributions to the district's sporting life in a year when the Olympics is making sporting achievement even more significant.'
  • Ministerial visit highlights Bicester progress
    Mark Prisk MP, the Minister of State for Business and Enterprise, paid a visit to Bicester on Monday 23 April to see at first-hand how Bicester is turning itself into a new eco-friendly economic hub for Oxfordshire and beyond. The newly built John Paul II Centre played host to the ministerial visit.
